Nuclear Power; Is It Really Safe?

Nuclear Power; Is It Really Safe?

With the recent disaster in the wake of last weeks 9.0 Japanese earthquake I find myself rethinking our use of nuclear power as a way to quench our unchecked desires for cheap electricity here at home as well as around our country.  Sure we like all the glittering lights and instant on devices in our lives but is this being rational?  The question still remains, Nuclear Power, Is it really safe?

For each of us, this question will mean something entirely different.  In bush Alaska the need for large quantities of electrical power is not there but in places like New York or Los Vegas, the unrestrained waste is scary, and the use of renewable resources and low consumption options are seamingly not being explored.  Why this is I’m only left to guess but I am sure it has more to do with saving immediate cash rather then saving energy, lives and ultimately the planet we call home.

If the circles on the map are widened to a 50-mile radius (the same evacuation area that U.S. nuclear officials recommended for Americans living near Japan’s troubled Fukushima Dai-ichi reactors), they would cover one in three people in the U.S.

Man, I’m starting to sound like one of those tree hugging greenies from the 60′s.  Could it be that they were correct?

Alternatives to Nuclear Power!

Today, there are lots of viable alternatives to nuclear power available to us here in the United States as well as to those in other countries.  Let’s take a look at a few of them that can be implemented without any or with very little expense and see what each of us can do to curb our personal uses of dangerously generated electrical power.

  • CFL Lights: Switching to CFL lighting is the first step and one that saves immense power in a very short time.  This is a cheap upgrade to our homes and our businesses that puts dollars back into our pockets and reduces our need for power immediately.
  • Power Strips: Yes those cheap power strips can not only protect our appliances like TV’s and computers from a power surge but if we flip the switch when not in use our daily power consumption drops with little to no effort or inconvenience to our daily lives.
  • Outdoor Lighting: We all like it but did you know that there are solar powered LED lights on the market for as little as $2.00 at places like Walmart that work remarkably well?
  • Solar Power:  Clean and renewable, solar power is something that we all need to look at as a source for cheap power around our homes. Today, solar power comes in
  • Wind Power:  In much of Americas Heartland today, massive wind generation farms are supplying renewable energy to businesses and homes every day.  This is green power that we need to be subsidizing instead of nuclear power, controversial ethanol fuels, or fossil fuel generation (mainly coal).
  • Hybrid Vehicles:   It’s time that we all think about replacing our daily commuters with one of the new hybrid vehicles available on the market today.  Cars like the Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid and Chevy Volt all make good money sense now that fuel prices are skyrocketing and our need to wean off expensive fossil fuels grows. This helps to reduce our needs for Nuclear power by reducing our needs for fossil fuel generated electricity. Solar charging stations are being built in many metro areas today. I even say combo solar/wind stations in Bellingham Washington on a recent trip to that city. As an example read Recharge It where a company like Google is striving to stabilize the electrical grid by accelerating the adoption of plug-in electric vehicles.

Recent Earthquakes in 2011

Largest Earthquake in Japan’s History

Waves expected over the next few hours on the West Coast of the United States caused by an 8.9 earthquake in Japan earlier this morning.

With the recent earthquake in Japan creating tsunami waves in Hawaii and the Tsunami Alert for New Zealand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Alaska, Washington State, Oregon and more, I found myself wondering just how many major earthquakes we have had in 2011 alone.

Recent Earthquakes in 2011

Like there’s not enough already to worry about today. People were already hurting, far to many are going without adequate food to eat, many are living in there cars or on the streets, and now mother earth is joining in with the disastrous economic situation to complete a one two punch on a population already knocked to her knees.

Is God testing us? Are we responding to this current situation like we would hope others would if the situation was turned around on us? Let’s stop and take a moment to reflect upon the history our fathers have left behind and see how our legacy will be portrayed in the coming generations.

From earthquakes to tsunamis, hurricanes to tornadoes, seems like the news seldom needs to look very far for stories relating to tragic events that are greatly impacting the lives of our friends and neighbors. What we as a population do with that news defines us and our generations.

Now I must ask, how will we be remembered?
